Background of the Study
Absenteeism among students remains a pervasive challenge that undermines academic performance and overall school development. In Gusau, school sports programs have been identified as a promising approach to mitigate this issue by fostering student engagement, school spirit, and a sense of responsibility. Participation in sports has been shown to improve physical fitness, mental well-being, and social interaction, all of which contribute to a more positive attitude towards school attendance (Thompson, 2023). Schools that integrate sports programs into their extracurricular offerings create an environment where students are motivated to attend classes regularly in order to participate in competitive and recreational activities. Recent research has demonstrated that active involvement in school sports is associated with reduced absenteeism, as students are more likely to attend school when they feel connected and supported by their peers and educators (Upton, 2024).

In Gusau’s schools, sports initiatives are designed not only as avenues for physical exercise but also as platforms for building community and instilling discipline. Regular practice sessions, inter-school competitions, and sports events serve to create structured schedules and routines that encourage consistent attendance. Educators and coaches collaborate to ensure that sports activities complement academic objectives, thereby reinforcing the value of regular school attendance. Moreover, school sports provide an opportunity for early identification of students who are at risk of chronic absenteeism, enabling timely interventions through mentorship and counseling (Villarreal, 2025). The integration of sports into the school environment fosters a holistic approach to education, where physical, emotional, and academic development are interlinked, thus reducing absenteeism and promoting overall student well-being.

However, challenges such as inadequate sports infrastructure, inconsistent program delivery, and limited funding can impede the full potential of these initiatives. Despite these obstacles, the commitment of school administrators and community stakeholders in Gusau to promote regular attendance through sports remains strong. As educational institutions continue to refine their strategies, the role of school sports programs in reducing absenteeism is expected to become even more pronounced, contributing to improved academic outcomes and enhanced student engagement (Wright, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Chronic absenteeism continues to affect academic performance and student engagement in Gusau, with several underlying factors contributing to the problem. Although school sports programs have the potential to address absenteeism by increasing student motivation and involvement, many schools encounter obstacles in fully leveraging these programs. A significant challenge is the inconsistent implementation of sports initiatives across different schools, often due to limited funding, inadequate facilities, and a shortage of trained sports personnel (Yates, 2023). As a result, while some students benefit from regular engagement in sports activities, others remain disengaged and absent, undermining the overall impact of the programs.

Additionally, the absence of integrated monitoring systems makes it difficult to assess the direct correlation between sports participation and improved attendance. Without systematic evaluation and feedback, schools are unable to identify and address the factors that deter students from attending classes. Social factors, including economic pressures on families and a lack of community support for educational initiatives, further compound the issue. In many cases, the emphasis on academic achievement is overshadowed by challenges in maintaining student interest, particularly among those who do not perceive a clear link between classroom learning and extracurricular activities (Zimmerman, 2024).

Moreover, the competitive nature of some sports programs may inadvertently alienate students who are less athletically inclined, contributing to feelings of exclusion and further absenteeism. This problem is exacerbated by the limited scope of programs that fail to offer a variety of activities appealing to a broad range of interests. Therefore, the core issue is not merely the existence of sports programs but their quality, inclusivity, and integration with overall educational objectives. Addressing these challenges necessitates a comprehensive review of existing programs, improved resource allocation, and strategies that foster a supportive and engaging environment for all students (Andrews, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of school sports programs on reducing student absenteeism.

  2. To identify challenges that hinder effective sports program implementation in reducing absenteeism.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving sports initiatives to enhance regular school attendance.

Research Questions

  1. How do school sports programs affect student attendance in Gusau schools?

  2. What are the major challenges faced by schools in implementing effective sports programs?

  3. What improvements can be made to sports programs to reduce absenteeism among students?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H1: Participation in school sports programs is associated with lower levels of student absenteeism.

  2. H2: Schools with well-structured and inclusive sports programs report higher attendance rates.

  3. H3: Enhanced resource allocation and program management significantly reduce absenteeism in schools.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of school sports programs in reducing absenteeism among students in Gusau. The insights gained will assist educational administrators and policymakers in designing programs that enhance student engagement and regular attendance. By identifying key challenges and proposing effective strategies, the research aims to contribute to improved academic performance and overall student well-being. The findings will serve as a valuable resource for enhancing extracurricular programming and fostering a more inclusive and supportive school environment (Bennett, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to examining the influence of school sports programs on student absenteeism in Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State. It focuses exclusively on attendance outcomes related to sports participation.
